Sounds of China presents:MUSIC FROM THE TIME OF MARCO POLO
"Music from the Time of Marco Polo" is a concert program featuring the ancient music of the Chinese silk-stringed gu qin and medieval Italian pieces performed on the transverse flute, medieval harp, and bells. John Thompson, the only person systematically to study and perform guqin music from this period, plays music Marco Polo could have heard in China around the year 1280. Festivitas Artium Schola, under the direction of Raho Langsepp, plays instrumental music Polo could have heard back in Italy after 1300. This program also features a special extended performance of ancient melodies by noted pipa soloist Zhang Hong Yan.

Introduction
We're about Chinese Culture and media...
We provide a resource for all to pursue interests in the Chinese language and culture beyond the boundaries of Columbia. Our weekly Cantonese and Mandarin radio programs on 89.9FM reach a wide off-campus audience in the tri-state area. We also provide workshops, monthly movie screenings, and field trips that run throughout the school year. Some of our annual event-highlights include Dumpling Dinner Karaoke Night (DDKN), Mahjong Madness, and radio drama productions.
Come join us! We look forward to an exciting school year.
