Benvenuti! Welcome to the Societa' Italiana!

The Societa' Italiana is one of the oldest groups on campus, with its origins reaching back to 1825,
when Lorenzo Da Ponte
(who wrote the librettos of such famous Mozart operas as "Le Nozze di Figaro", "Cosi fan tutte" and "Don Giovani", among others) was appointed the first Professor of Italian at Columbia University.

Today, the Societa` is a group of Italian and Italian-American students seeking to create a stronger Italian community at Columbia while promoting Italian culture on a university wide level.
We have weekly or bi-weekly events to promote Italian and Italian-American culture and heritage, including Movie Nights, Caffe' e Conversazione, various Cultural Cuisine events and trips throughout the city.

Although we often attend their events, we are not affiliated with the Casa Italiana, now renamed the
Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University.
For information about the Italian Academy, please follow the above link to their website or email them at itacademy@columbia.edu.
