Columbia SPPO

Graduate Association of Spanish and Portuguese

The Graduate Association of Spanish and Portuguese (GASP) is a student-run organization constituted by the graduate students of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of Columbia University. GASP is officially recognized by the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC) as a “sponsored group," funded by the department but run independently by students. All graduate students in the department are members of GASP and are encouraged to participate in its activities.

The goals of the Graduate Association of Spanish and Portuguese are to

  • provide a forum for graduate students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese to discuss and educate members about issues that directly affect them as graduate students, teaching assistants, and future academic professionals
  • create a more cohesive graduate group by facilitating peer support networks and establishing student mentorship pairings
  • officially represent the department’s graduate students to the department, the university’s administration, and the university’s graduate student body.

Throughout the academic year, GASP organizes monthly meetings, academic and professional roundtables, social hours, and other events. GASP is also responsible in alternate years for the organization of the annual Columbia-NYU Graduate Student Conference on Hispanic and Lusophone Literatures and Cultures.
