Introduction
The Ph.D. program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Columbia is a five-year program that aims to provide students with a well-rounded and rigorous formation in the literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America, to oversee their specialization in one or more areas of Hispanic studies, and to allow them to pursue comparative or interdisciplinary work. Students complement their work in the department with coursework in other disciplines such as Comparative Literature, Philosophy, History, and English. Certificate programs are available also in Comparative Literature and Society, Feminist Scholarship, and Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
The department's faculty is committed to preparing scholars and teachers of the highest caliber. Teaching Fellows participate in an extensive teacher training program sponsored by the department. Students typically have the opportunity to teach the various levels of the language instruction sequence as well as courses on Hispanic culture. In addition, the department sponsors workshops on topics such as writing an abstract for submission to a conference, navigating the profession, preparing for the job market, mastering research tools, writing a grant proposal, etc. Graduates of the program have consistently secured tenure-track positions at some of the best colleges and universities in the country.
The Hispanic Institute, housed in the department, sponsors the Revista Hispánica Moderna, a prestigious academic journal published since 1934. Graduate students may serve as editorial assistants to the journal, thereby acquiring first-hand knowledge of the workings of an academic publication.
