Marc A. Hertzman

Assistant Professor

Marc A. Hertzman is Assistant Professor of Latin American & Iberian Cultures and Director of Columbia's Center for Brazilian Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he was Andrew W. Mellon in Latin American Studies at Wesleyan University, where he taught courses about Brazilian history and culture, music, colonialism, and intellectual and cultural property. His doctoral thesis won the 2009 New England Council of Latin American Studies Best Dissertation Award.

His work has appeared in Hispanic American Historical
Review
and Journal of Latin American Studies. His
first book, Making Samba: A New History of Race and Music in Brazil, will be published by Duke University Press in March 2013.
