
Luis Gonçalves
Lecturer in Language (Portuguese)
Luis Gonçalves specializes in Lusophone culture and civilization of the 20th century and their transatlantic dynamic. He teaches courses in Portuguese Language using the Communicative Approach to language teaching, and also courses in culture and civilization from the Portuguese-speaking world. He also coordinates the Portuguese language program. He holds a Ph.D. in Luso-Brazilian Literatures, with a Minor in Communication Studies and a specialization in Cultural Studies, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was born in Mozambique, and his dissertation focuses on the writing of Mia Couto and questions of hegemony, ruptures and continuities in Mozambican identity from the colonial to the national period. Other research interests include Lusophone literature and film, Afro-Brazilian social practices, border literature and its dynamics in the Lusophone world, Diaspora, migrations and migrant communities, in particular from Portugal, Cape Verde and, more recently, from Brazil to the United States.
