Mary Sutton ][ I
cannot speak entirely for the Smith community, but I think most would
agree when I say that Ethnic Studies is something very much alive and
well on this campus. For example, after the tragic events of September
11th, instead of leading an angry crusade for war, the administration
and student body collectively understood that it is more crucial for
us to be sympathetic toward the citizens of Afghanistan and find peace
within ourselves through understanding of Islam - that ambiguous religion
that most have viewed as our source of strife with the Middle East.
We have various organizations and festivals on campus that celebrate
diversity and offer opportunities for others to learn about a culture
they may know little, if anything, about. One could certainly call Smith
a warm, sympathetic community where diversity is treasured and minorities
are, for the most part, not patronized, but welcomed into the classroom
and the social sphere.
Neema Khatri ][ Smith College offers three
ethnic studies majors, Afro-American Studies, East Asian Studies, and
Latin American and Latino/a Studies. In addition, Five College Certificates
are available in African Studies, Asian/Pacific/American Studies, Latin
American Studies, and Middle East Studies. The Five College Certificate
Program is offered in addition to or in conjunction with the student's
major.
