We'll be electing our new President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Webmaster, and two new positions: Executive Committee Members. For more information, just come to the elections!

After that, there'll be a private screening of Talking Cock, a controversial Singapore film that is rarely shown in Singapore since its distribution is subversively suppressed.

Singapore Expo!!
Venue :: Jed D. Satow Conference Room, 5th floor of Lerner
Date    :: Apr 5, 2003 (Saturday)
Time    :: 11 am - 3pm
Like talking cock? Like talking cock about Singapore? Like www.talkingcock.com? Want to talk cock about www.talkingcock.com talking cock about Singapore? Come check out a fun SSA event this Saturday! We've invited Colin Goh and Joyceln Woo, founding members of you-know-which website, Singapore's most popular satirical website (if you haven't heard of it, go see!) to talk about a land far, far away, whose people have to be told how to flush toilets and romance each other, and where TV scripts are vetted by government bodies for grammatical mistakes. It'll be a great opportunity to hear their perspectives as Singaporeans skating on the thin OB marker between "satirical" and "political" as well as their views on Singlish and censorship. If you're lucky, you'll also get to hear and see clips from "Talking Cock: The Movie."

And if you really need more convincing, the talk will be followed by food catered from Nyonya...now you know you want to come, and you also want to invite those friends, classmates and floormates who keep asking you if it's true that you get flogged in public for chewing gum in Singapore.

Movie Night!!
Venue :: Lerner Hall, E568
Date    :: Feb 20, 2003 (Saturday)
Time    :: 9 pm - 11pm
Come see yet another made-in-Singapore film, with a few important differences:
(1) Neither Lee Kuan Yew nor the PAP make a single appearance, nor are they even mentioned
(2) It's a movie about young people but they do not suffer from teenage angst, fret about boy-girl-relationships or complain about the oppressive education system, in fact they don't go to school, instead they join gangs, traffic drugs and beat each other up. Ok two of them do fall in love but only sort of.

In other words, a Singaporean film that doesn't have a political agenda and isn't even trying to be a film "about Singapore" - if you can spot any allegories or symbolism, we'll buy you a drink. Or maybe just refill your plastic cup.
At any rate, don't miss this opportunity to enjoy a good movie, munch on pizza and celebrate the arrival of the weekend!
