COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER: POSITIVE MINDS-STRONG BODIES PROGRAM

Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking Community Health Workers to work at the Postive Minds - Strong Bodies Study. They are seeking Spanish-speaking staff for their NY sites for this part-time CHW position. The bulk of the participants will be in East Harlem, but there are some at the Chinatown site as well. They are asking for at least 10 hours/week availability

A program for elders to manage stress and improve physical health

Through a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Aging, the MGH Disparities Research Unit is conducting a study to examine how to build collaborative research to provide mental health and disability prevention treatments in community-based organizations (CBOs) that serve ethnic minority elderly clients. This program aims to prevent disability in the elderly by combining culturally and linguistically competent cognitive behavioral therapy (Positive Minds) and exercise (Strong Bodies).

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR:
Margarita Alegría, Ph.D.

THE INTERVENTION:

There will be two arms of the study: An intervention arm that will consist of a CBT-based psychoeducation intervention along with a group exercise intervention, and a control arm that consists of written materials about physical and mental self care and regular symptom checks.

  • Intervention Group: Each participant randomized to the intervention group will receive 10 individual psychoeducation sessions and 36 group exercise sessions.
  • Control group: Each participant in the control group will receive information from the NIH about depression and anxiety, and the importance of taking care of mental and physical health. Control group participants will be contacted by phone every other week for a symptom assesssment.
  • Both groups will be assessed at baseline and 2, 6, and 12 months to complete a more extensive set of questionnaires.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Age 60+
  • Fluency in English, Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese Chinese
  • Other eligibility criteria will be assessed in the initial screening.

OUTCOMES:

Assessments at Baseline, and 2 months, 6 months and 12 months after the intervention will assess the acceptability and satisfaction with the program, as well as changes in physical ability, depression, and anxiety.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 

VOLUNTEER RAPE CRISIS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCATE: BELLEVUE HOPSTIAL'S VICTIM SERVICES PROGRAM

Our Victim Services Program is looking for YOU...All gender identities age 18 and over to work as volunteer advocates for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors in the Bellevue and NYU emergency rooms. You must live within a 30 minute cab ride of the hospital and be available to volunteer for 18 months, two on-call shifts a month. Training is free and transportation costs are reimbursed. 40 hours of training are provided and includes the following dates:

Sundays: 9-5:30 October 2, 16 & 23
Thursdays: 6-10 October 6, 13, 20, 27
