Job Search Tips
Long Distance Job Search
If you are not tied down geographically, then you are in the enviable position of being able to go wherever the best job in the world is. None-the-less, you should follow the techniques you would use for any targeted search.
You should do a written self-appraisal in order to determine what would make a position “the best job in the world.” For example:
- Type of setting
- Population served
- Educational opportunities
- Geographic location
If you wish to relocate, there are resources to help you learn about an area:
- Call or write for a relocation packet from the local or state:
- Chamber of Commerce
- Office for Tourism
- Department of Labor
- See the Places Rated Almanac (available in the CUSSW Career Development Center or paperback bookstore.)
- Call the local public library reference desk and ask what resources they have on relocation to the area
- www.govspot.com
For information on social work job opportunities:
- Contact the local NASW chapter
- Contact the local chapter of other professional organizations that would like to have you as a new member
- Contact a CUSSW Alumni/ae Volunteer Information Delegate (see the AVID binder in the CUSSW Career Development Center)
- Search the CUSSW Alumni Directory (available in the CUSSW Career Development Center) (TIP: Contact alumni/ae from your college, too.)
- Call the local public library reference desk and ask what resources they have on employment in the area
- Call the local United Way or Junior League and order their directory of agencies
- Check the local yellow pages under “Social Services”
- Find out if the agency you work at has a branch or “sister” relationship with an agency where you wish to relocate
If you plan to visit an area, try to arrange for informational and job interviews during that time. Sometimes you can get an interview more easily if you are coming in from out-of-town. Some agencies may want to interview you over the phone before they arrange a face-to-face interview. (TIP: Have a friend help you do a practice telephone interview!)
