David Kilmnick currently teaches Advocacy in Social Work Practice and Sex and Social Work: Human Behavior, Attitudes and Society at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). He received his M.S.W. from StonyBrook University in 1993, and his PhD in Social Welfare from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York in 2006.


Dr. Kilmnick is also the founder and Executive Director of Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY). David Kilmnick has presented trainings and workshops at numerous regional, statewide, national and international conferences on a variety of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. He has also been the recipient of many awards, including the Lawrence Timpa Humanitarian Award for Professional Service from the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission in 2001, Suffolk County Social Worker of the Year in 1999 , the first ever Rich Amato Humanitarian Award for service to the Gay and Lesbian Community of Long Island, the South Suffolk NOW Equality and Diversity Award Recipient,  the Equality Award from The New York Civil Liberties Union in 2005 and the Jim Stephens Award for Human Rights Leadership from the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission in 2005.

David Kilmnick has played a critical role in the region around community organizing and the quest for marriage equality for same-sex couples. He started the Long Island Coalition for Same-Sex Marriage which coordinates efforts with other statewide and national groups in organizing, advocating and lobbying for progressive policy changes.
