Dr. Betty Barsa has taught the Field Instruction Seminar for Reduced Residency Students, Foundations of Social Work Practice, and Direct Practice courses at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) since 1996. She received a Ph.D. in Social Work from Columbia University in 1996 and an M.S.W. in 1976 from New York University.

Since earning her M.S.W., Dr. Barsa has worked as a social worker with homebound elderly in the Mental Health Outreach Program of the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has also worked as an in-patient social worker in the hospital’s acute care medical unit, the out-patient Medical Sub-specialties clinics, the Pediatric out-patient clinic, the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic, and as social work coordinator in the hospital’s Geriatric Group Practice/Ambulatory Care network Corporation. She has supervised CUSSW social work interns for over ten years, and has also worked as a coordinator for the Adult Centers for Comprehensive Education and Support Services (ACCESS) within the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) of Yonkers. Currently, Dr. Barsa has a private practice that includes geriatric and adult clients and their families. She published The Independence of the Urban Hispanic Elderly.
