Dr. Matthew Epperson is a recent graduate of the doctoral program at CUSSW. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Behavioral Health Services and Criminal Justice Research at the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University. He also works as a Research Scientist with the Social Intervention Group at CUSSW, where he is an investigator on a NIDA-funded efficacy study of a multimedia HIV prevention intervention targeting female defendants in the criminal justice system (P.I. Nabila El-Bassel).
Dr. Epperson has over 12 years of clinical and administrative experience in community mental health settings, including the development and implementation of a jail diversion program for persons with severe mental illness. His research interests include:
- Intervention research on the intersecting issues of criminal justice involvement, HIV, mental illness and substance abuse
- Dissemination / translational research
- Criminal Justice Populations
- HIV prevention and epidemiology
- Substance abuse and mental illness
- Criminal justice curricula in social work education
During his postdoctoral fellowship, he will be working with Dr.’s Jeffrey Draine and Steven Belenko in research areas of community reentry for mentally ill prisoners, HIV risk contexts for community based criminal justice participants, and HIV prevention interventions tailored for persons with mental illness.
Dr. Epperson teaches Criminal Justice / Social Work Interface at CUSSW. This course, which Matthew designed, focuses on the criminal justice system as a critical venue in which social workers can promote social justice. Dr. Epperson’s past courses include Clinical Case Evaluation, Quantitative Methods, and Evidence Based Practice for Persons with Serious Mental Health Conditions.
