Shirley Gatenio, Adjunct Associate Professor


Dr. Shirley Gatenio has taught Social Welfare Policy, Advocacy in Social Work and Research Methods at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) for ten years. Dr. Gatenio earned her Ph.D. on Social Work from Columbia in 2001. She received her M.S. from Columbia as well and her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Gatenio is currently the manager of the Clearinghouse for International Development in Child, Youth and Family Policies at Columbia University.

Dr. Gatenio's areas of interest are comparative child and family policy; the implementation of local early childhood education and care policies; and the use of technology to develop new information and advocacy communities. Dr. Gatenio has directed public policy analysis, lobbying and community organization efforts for public, large non-for-profit and community based organizations. She has spearheaded the founding of several collaborative entities aimed at improving service delivery and programming for the changing needs of children and their families.
