Donald McVinney has taught Direct
Practice and Social Work Practice in Alcoholism and Other
Chemical Dependency at the Columbia University
School of Social Work (CUSSW). He has a Master of Science
degree in Social Work from CUSSW and a Master of Philosophy
degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences.
Mr. McVinney received the Columbia University Presidents
Award for outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student, May
1999 and was named Outstanding Professor of the Year, 1999,
Columbia University School of Social Work, Student Union Executive
Board. Mr. McVinney is a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism
and Substance Abuse Counselor and has extensive experience
in the chemical dependency field. He is currently the National
Director of Education and Training at the Harm Reduction Coalition
in New York City. His research interests are in the areas
of chemical dependency, HIV/AIDS and gay and lesbian health.
Mr. McVinneys publications include Chemical Dependency
Treatment: Innovative Group Approaches (1997) and "Advanced
Generalist Practice and Programming," in The Columbia
University School of Social Work. A Centennial Celebration,
(Feldman & Kamerman, Editors, 2001). He was named the
Alcoholism Counselor of the Year in 1992 by the Academy of
Alcohol Studies of the New York State Office of Alcoholism
and Substance Abuse Services. Mr. McVinney is currently a
doctoral candidate at CUSSW in Advanced Social Work Practice
