Dr. Murphy is an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Field Advisor at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW), working with social service agencies, partnering with students and field instructors to ensure the best possible field placement experience for students.

Dr. Murphy has extensive experience as a social work administrator for more than thirty years directing various programs in the fields of substance abuse and child welfare. She has served as executive director of a community-based not for profit organization and is also president of Auburn Consulting.  She is educational coordinator for the community residential programs of SCO Family of Services in New York City. At CUSSW, Dr. Murphy teaches:                                               

  • Foundations Overview for Advanced Standing SEA and Policy students
  • Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI)


Dr. Murphy’s dissertation, "A Place to Lay My Head: The Definition of Home in the Voice of Young People in Foster Care," explored the experiences of youth close to aging out of foster care. This study recognizes the need for continued education and training for workers in the child welfare system at all levels and for enhanced understanding of what home means to these vulnerable young people. Dr. Murphy also maintains licensure as an LCSW/R with New York State.
