Susan Nayowith
Adjunct Lecturer

Susan Nayowith teaches Contemporary Social Problems at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). She received an M.S.S.W. in Social Work from CUSSW in 1984 and a Ph.D. from New York University in 2000.

Since earning her M.S.S.W., Susan Nayowith has worked in community
mental health and social action with individuals in SRO hotels, homeless
shelters, and day programs. She has experience working for both private, not-for- profit and government agencies. Currently, she runs a family shelter for the Department of Homeless Services. The facility provides a range of services to 190 families living in temporary shelter in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.

Susan Nayowith is on the Executive Committee of the New York City
Chapter of National Association of Social Workers as well as other Boards of Agencies promoting Social Justice and Participation.

Susan Nayowith has co-authored "Creating Community: Group Work to
Develop Social Support Networks with Homeless Mentally Ill" and "Group
Work with the Homeless Mentally Ill: In Shelters, Drop-in Centers, and
SRO Hotels." Her dissertation was titled, "The development of a 'good
enough' shelter and a secure base."
