Eleanor Nealy
Adjunct Lecturer

Ms. Eleanor C. Nealy teaches a course on Spirituality in Social Work Practice at Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). Entering the profession with a BSW in 1981, Ms. Nealy has worked with both adolescents and adults in the fields of addiction recovery, mental health and HIV/AIDS over the past twenty years. In 1993, she was a graduate of the dual degree program, receiving a M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary and an MSSW from Columbia University. As an ordained clergyperson with Metropolitan Community Churches, Ms. Nealy has worked extensively with faith-based community building organizations.

Currently Ms. Nealy serves as Director of Mental Health and Social Services for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in New York City, overseeing Center CARE, the adult mental health and substance abuse counseling program, including the Gender Identity Project; Youth Enrichment Services, an activities-oriented adolescent and young adult HIV and substance abuse prevention program; Center Mediation Services; and Center Kids, an LGBT families program.

Ms. Nealy is author of Amazon Spirit: Daily Meditations for Lesbians in Recovery, Berkeley, 1995; Early Intervention with Active Drug and Alcohol Users in Community-Based Settings, in Chemical Dependency Treatment: Innovative Group Approaches (ed: L. Donald McVinney) The Haworth Press, 1997, pp. 5-20; and co-author of a training curriculum for the U. S. Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) to accompany the manual, A Provider's Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment with LGBT Persons (in print, 2003).
