Evelyn J. Nieves, Ph.D.
Adjunct Assistant Lecturer

Evelyn J. Nieves, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of Fordham-Tremont Community Mental Health Center. She has served in this position since January 2002.

Dr. Nieves is an experienced social worker, administrator and educator who brings a holistic perspective to mental health services. She has traveled extensively and has visited social work programs in Chile and Cuba. She is actively involved in advocacy committees and organizations committed to improving access to mental health services for underserved populations.

As a former Assistant Commissioner in the City Department of Mental Health from 1992 to 1997, she developed and implemented new mental health treatment models and program evaluation protocols for outpatient services in the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx.

In the 1980s she served in the City Department of Mental Health's Office of Program Review and Evaluation where she was responsible for coordinating and conducting the onsite program evaluations of all New York City Community Mental Health Centers and Hospital providers.

Dr. Nieves also has a lengthy academic record. She previously served as assistant professor/director of Field Education at Long Island University and has been an adjunct professor at New York University, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Work and Bronx Community College. She earned a Ph.D. at Yeshiva University, Wurzweiller School of Social Work, in 1999. She based her thesis on the much praised evidenced based Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Model. The focus of this comparative study was to assess the treatment benefits of ACT in an urban setting. The two community mental health centers used for the study were Fordham Tremont Community Mental Health Center and Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
