William Benjamin Nowell is a doctoral student concentrating in Social Work Practice in health care at the Columbia University School of Social Work.  His research interests include chronic disease management, gerontology, volunteerism, and HIV. He is currently researching the impact of disease management programs on pain and symptom management among older adults with arthritis.  Ben has a M.S.W. in Management and Planning from the University of California at Berkeley School of Social Welfare. Prior to coming to Columbia, Ben worked as a hospital social worker and Community and Long Term Care Coordinator for the Regional Stroke Centre located in Ottawa, Ontario.  Ben has been facilitating leadership training programs in civic engagement and volunteerism for more than 15 years.
