John Robertson teaches Social Welfare
Policy and Advocacy in
Social Work Practice at the Columbia University
School of Social Work (CUSSW). He received a Ph.D. in labor
economics and social policy from CUSSW in 1995, and an M.S.
in casework from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey
in 1990.
Dr. Robertson's interests include neighborhood work with
a focus on community development and organization, employment
and family issues and the treatment of substance abusers.
He is involved in community social work practice in the Bushwick
section of Brooklyn. He has worked on several national policy
research initiatives relating to poor families, their employment,
family formation and receipt of public assistance. His publications
include: "Social work with families after PRWORA: family
systems and rational choice models"; "Relational
discord and depressiv symptomatology among non-marital co-parents";
"Using geographical information systems to enhance community-based
child welfare services"; "Young nonresidential fathers
have lower earnings: Implications for increasing child support
payments" and "Using the criminal justice system
to prevent adolescent drug abuse."
He has taught research
methods and human behavior courses. He is presently teaching
Community Development and Children and Youth Policy at the
George Warren Brown School of Social Work, at Washington
University in St. Louis, MO.
