His social work career has focused on working with families.  He has worked in family preventive services programs, including Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service and Good Shepherd Services, providing individual, couples, and family counseling in English and Spanish. Most recently, he has been employed by the Social Intervention Group working with drug-involved couples in a risk-reduction intervention study.

Vega has been an instructor and trainer for almost 10 years. He began his career as a New York City public high school teacher, moving from there to develop and teach GED subject curricula for an educational/vocational program serving at-risk and homeless youth. For the last few years, he has been providing training and consultation to social service agencies, including the New York City Administration for Children's Services, on clinical issues and skills related to working with immigrant families.
