Bio:
Dr. Carlson is Associate Professor of Social Work and Sociology at Columbia University. Her primary research interests center on the links between family contexts and the wellbeing of children and parents, including the effects of relevant public policies. Her most recent work is focused on father involvement, co-parenting, union formation, and couple relationship quality among unmarried parents. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology (demography) from the University of Michigan in 1999, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University (Center for Research on Child Wellbeing) from 1999 to 2001, and has been at the Columbia University School of Social Work since 2001. Prior to graduate school, she worked for three years on social policy issues in Washington, D.C., first at the Subcommittee on Human Resources of the Ways & Means Committee, U.S. House of Representatives, and then in the Human Services Policy division of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
