Practice Experience:
Professor McGowan practiced for 6 years at a family and child welfare agency in Boston, serving first as a clinical social worker and later as a supervisor and director of the family home department. She also worked for 2 years as a program associate for the Children's Defense Fund where she engaged in case and class advocacy and research around issues related to children of women prisoners and children in placement in the child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems.
Since joining the faculty, Professor McGowan has provided case and program consultation at several family and child service agencies, presented many staff development seminars, and served as an expert witness in five lawsuits related to children's rights and homeless families. As a former member of NASW's Committees on Inquiry at both the local and national levels, she has also helped to adjudicate many ethical and professional practice complaints.
