Bio:
Dr. Hien's career has been devoted to studying and treating urban women and families. Over the past sixteen years, her team of interdisciplinary clinicians and scientists have studied the effects of exposure to interpersonal violence and adverse outcomes on women and their children, as well as tested trauma treatment models for traumatized populations with comorbid addictive disorders in single and multi-site studies. They have examined relationships between victimization, perpetration and the intergenerational manifestations of these linkages, and have used our understandings to (1) characterize high-risk, low-income populations with regard to interpersonal victimization and links to substance abuse, (2) provide evidence of the association of maternal aggressive and antisocial behavior and substance use behaviors, (3) examine developmental factors associated with interpersonal violence exposures and onset of addictive disorders; and (4) examine efficacy of treatments for traumatic exposure, PTSD and AOD comorbidity. They have also established a specialty clinical treatment program, the Women’s Health Project Treatment and Research Center, in the Department of Psychiatry at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center that serves as a training program for social work interns, psychology pre- and post-doctoral fellows and psychiatry residents.
