An article co-authored by professor Jane Waldfogel, associate professor Neeraj Kaushal, and alumna Qin Gao (‘05PhD) of the Columbia University School of Social Work has been selected as one of the twenty best articles of 2008 in the annual Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research competition.

Fred Ssewamala to Design Pilot Program for Child Development Accounts in Nigeria
Dr. Ssewamala will be collaborating with the Bayelsa State government of Nigeria to design and implement a pilot program for child development accounts (CDAs).  The program, which is facilitated by the World Bank, would be the first of its kind in Nigeria and at the state level in Africa.

School of Social Work Student Wins NASW-NYC Essay Contest
Elizabeth Lyons, a second year student at the Columbia University School of Social Work, was awarded with the PACE essay scholarship by the National Association of Social Workers-New York City chapter (NASW-NYC).

Craig Schwalbe Appointed William T. Grant Scholar
Dr. Schwalbe is among four finalists selected from a pool of 70 applicants. He will receive an award of $350,000 for his research.

Jane Waldfogel Appointed Visiting Professor at London School of Economics and Political Science
Dr. Waldfogel's current research includes a study of the consequences of Britain’s war on poverty and a study of income-related gaps in cognitive and behavioral aspects of school readiness in the US and UK.

Dr. Alfred J. Kahn, A Giant in Comparative International Social Welfare, Dies
Alfred J. Kahn, Professor Emeritus at the Columbia University School ofSocial Work and world-renowned social policy scholar and educator. Dr. Kahn passed away on the morning of February 13, 2009. He was 90 years of age.

Children from Low-Income families at Educational Disadvantage Prior to School Entry
Children born into low-income families in the US and UK in the early years of the twenty-first century are already at a sizeable disadvantage even before they start school, according to new research by professor Jane Waldfogel of the Columbia University School of Social Work.

In a new exhibition sponsored by the Open Society Institute at the Columbia University School of Social Work entitled “In the Shadow of Power: Poverty in Washington, D.C.,” Venezuelan photographer Kike Arnal documents D.C.'s inner-city neighborhoods from an outsider perspective.

Professor Vincent Guilamo-Ramos Invited to Participate in NYC Dads Campaign

Dr. Guilamo-Ramos will participate as an online social work expert for NYC Dads, a citywide public-education campaign of the New York City Human Resources Administration and the Department of Social Services focused on the important role of fathers in their children’s lives.

Professor Vicki Lens to Study the Efficacy of the the Fair Hearings System
Last year, over 100,000 fair hearings were held in New York State.  However, little is known about their effectiveness and usefulness to citizens.  Dr. Lens will be conducting a study to examine the efficacy of the fair hearing system in New York State.
