School of Social Work Update (as of August 28, 9:00pm)

As weather conditions outside improve following Hurricane Irene, the Columbia University School of Social Work encourages its students, faculty, and staff to continue taking appropriate precautions and monitor information sources. In preparation for resuming normal operations at the School tomorrow, Monday, August 29, we are providing the following information to students, faculty and staff. Due to changing conditions and weather reports, we encourage everyone to check this page or call 212-851-2222 for updates about the School’s status.

Students

In anticipation of inclement weather in NYC due to Hurricane Irene, the Fall Orientation activities are POSTPONED until TUESDAY, AUG. 30. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. at the School of Social Work, 1255 Amsterdam Avenue, between 121st and 122nd streets. We are looking forward to seeing you as well and hope that you all will be ready to start officially on Tuesday!  Please plan to attend your orientation sessions that will be rescheduled for Tuesday-Friday.  An amended schedule will be posted online on the Admitted Students website and also e-mailed to you once all adjustments have been made.  In the interim, we wanted to share the following updates and important information.

>SOCIAL WORK BUILDING WILL BE OPEN MONDAY

We realize that many of you may already be in New York City and would welcome the opportunity to invite you to  the School on Monday and meet with fellow students, faculty and staff. For those who would like to come by on Monday, starting at 2 PM, student leaders, faculty, and staff will be available to meet with you and give you your Orientation packet, T-shirts and other goodies. No actual Orientation events will be held on Monday, but the Social Work building will be open to you from 2-5 p.m. that day.  If you decide to visit us Monday, we ask that you do so with extreme caution and first check the status of NYC-area transportation. Officials have already announced that NYC subway and bus lines will be shutdown after noon on Saturday, and anticipate that service may not return until Monday morning or later.

If you are unable to attend Tuesday’s Orientation events, please e-mail
sw-studentservices@columbia.edu.

>UNIVERSITY HOUSING & MOVING IN MONDAY

If you were slated to move into a University Apartment Housing (UAH) location on Monday, you should have received an e-mail notifying you that move-ins are currently scheduled to proceed as planned. However, that is subject to change. Please constantly monitor the University’s website for updates.

If you would like to change your arrival time, you may do so by e-mailing uah@columbia.edu. UAH also has requested that if you are unable to change your travel plans, you should e-mail your itinerary to uah@columbia.edu, and include how you intend to reach the University (car, plane, train, bus) and when you hope to reach the City (which may be different than your lease/contract signing appointment).  If you intend to come by plane, please include information on your carrier, arrival date, flight number so that we can try to accommodate you if your flight is delayed.  If your plans change at the last minute for any reason such as flight cancellations or missed connections please feel free to let us know either by email or, during regular work hours, via phone at 212-854-9302 or 212-854-9306.  You may also leave messages outside of regular work hours by calling 212-854-2222.
