Men's Swimming and Diving Has High Hopes
BETHANY HOLSTROM Spectator Junior Staff Writer In the chlorine-drenched depths of the Dodge Physical Fitness Center the men's swimming and diving team has been preparing for their season. And how is the squad looking this year? "We're going to find out," said Head Coach Jim Bolster. The team begins the season with a meet against Harvard and Army at West Point on Friday and has another meet Sunday at the University of Massachusetts. The swimming contingent has had a few distractions, causing Bolster to be "cautiously optimistic." Several strong swimmers have returned, but five of the eight seniors that were supposed to be back are no longer with the team, taking away some important leadership. There is still a lot of talent in the program, especially from first-years Julien Howe, Arpad Sebe, Adam Green, Lawrence Lee, Daniel Kim, Paul Barnes, and Adrian Piergallini. They are mostly swimming the strokes that were weaknesses last year--the backstroke, breaststroke, and individual medley. Men's Swimming Falls Twice before Notching Win By BETHANY HOLMSTROM Spectator Staff Writer It was a long weekend for mens swimming and diving as it fought three formidable foes: Harvard, Army, and the University of Massachusetts. At the Army-Harvard Double Dual Meet, Harvard beat the Lions 152-91, and Army barely came out on top at 123 to the Blue's 120 but lost to Harvard 177-66. The men?s swimming and diving team wrapped up its first weekend of competition in the new year with two victories against Stony Brook and Dartmouth. On Friday, the Blue swam Stony Brook at Uris, beating them 121 to 101. Stony Brook, having just entered Division I this season, is a mere 1-5. Columbia dominated in the majority of the events, but because of Stony Brook?s fledgling Division I status, many of the races were deemed unofficial. Columbia captured both diving events as well, with all of the divers taking the top three spots, but the first and second place finishes were declared to be unofficial.

| In his last home meet on Jan. 29, senior Gered Doherty left his mark on Uris Pool, capturing two records in the Lions’ 140-103 defeat at the hands of Princeton. In setting a pool record in the 50-yard freestyle and contributing to a record in the 400-yard medley relay, Doherty capped off a career of excellence in the pool for the Light Blue. more...

| It was not supposed to be so close. Navy should have beaten Columbia effortlessly. With the deeper team and the home pool advantage-Navy?s pool is 25 meters long as opposed to the 25-yard variety in Dodge-Navy was a heavy favorite coming in. But the trip and the longer pool didn?t seem to bother men?s swimming and diving at all. Instead it came down to the very end as Navy defeated and overmatched Lion squad 125-116 in Annapolis on Saturday. As with Brown the weekend before, it was another close meet. more...

| It?s not often that the team who places sixth out of 10 pulls down the lion?s share of the post-meet awards. That is what happened, however, when the men?s swimming and diving squad traveled to Princeton on Thursday for this weekend?s Eastern Swimming Championships. The Light Blue coaching staff picked up two awards, as Jim Bolster was named Swimming Coach of the Year and Gordon Spencer the Diving Coach of the Year. more...Coach: jbb2@columbia.edu Webmaster: mgs28@columbia.edu Send a recruit form by following this link | ||||
