In her relentless effort for more than 40 years, Taiwan has finally earned herself the opportunity to become a truly democratic society. On March 23, 1996, Taiwanese people will elect their own president. It is the first time ever in the entire four thousand years of Chinese history (and Taiwanese history of 400 years) that people are able to choose their own leader. Yet, facing such a remarkable achievement of the 21 million Taiwanese people, the communist People's Republic of China is determined to destroy the fruit of democracy. Since March 8, PRC has launched four missiles and opened live fires over the Taiwan Straight, with the intention to turn the pride of Taiwanese people-- freedom, peace and prosperity-- into humiliation, terror and poverty.

The communist PRC's hostile act towards Taiwan is a terrorism toward the world as a whole. We, the overseas Taiwanese students, have to make every effort to inform the world of the situation. A worldwide 24-hour vigil on the eve of the presidential election day, March 23, will be held to pray for the smooth and successful voting process. The theme of the vigil will be "For Peace, Love, and Democracy-- Guarding Taiwan's' Democracy Against China's Military Threat." In the tri-state area, the vigil will be held at Time Square, New York City, beginning at noon of March 22. There will be candle lights (please bring a candle with you), singling, live performance and praying for peace.

We urge you to join us in this peaceful event to protest against China's military threats and to support the human rights and democracy of Taiwanese people. We need your moral and financial support. Please contact us.

This is a projects put together by graduate students (anonymous to poverty) from Taiwan. We sure use some financial support. Other than donating through our stations in many different locations in the City, we greatly appreciate if you can lend or donate the following items:

Outdoor Lighting and Sound Equipment: Amps, speakers, lighting, microphones. We need them on the night of the Vigil.

Cellular Phones: We need them for coordination. We greatly appreciate it if we can borrow it for a week. We'll pay the phone bill, of course.

Drums and musical instruments

Candles: Although we ask people to bring a candle, many won't. We have to prepare about 1000 candles and they cost a LOT. Please get in touch with us if you can donate any candles, or provide a cheap resource.
