2010 Summer Teaching Scholars

The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce, in partnership with the Summer Term Office, a new course development initiative and invites Ph.D. students in the Arts and Sciences to submit course proposals for teaching in Summer Term 2010. Courses will be selected on a competitive basis using the following criteria:

  • innovation in course content, teaching methods, or student learning activities
  • course design that reflects the value-added component of a class in NYC, e.g., use of NYC museums, archives, guest lecturers, etc.
course content that reflects emerging and timely issues in the discipline/field
  • fit within department requirements for majors
  • excellence in prior GSAS TA experience
  • satisfactory progress to degree and program support of proposal
    quality of overall proposal

Please note:

Proposals are invited from GSAS students in the Arts and Sciences who have completed requirements for the MPhil degree and who are within their first seven years (in 2009-10) of initial registration in their PhD program.

Students who wish to submit proposals by the October 1 deadline are encouraged to attend technical sessions. At these sessions we will discuss technical requirements, criteria for selection, and offer helpful advice on course design and development and on how to submit a competitive proposal.

To submit an application, complete the proposal form. Obtain the approval of your department and your advisor before submitting the proposal. Please include a current Curriculum Vitae with your application.

In addition to the standard Summer Term salary, students with successful course proposals will be invited to participate in a GSAS Teaching Workshop and will be provided meals, books and other resources on teaching as well as an allocation to purchase other books and resources to use in their summer teaching.

Students interested in teaching a course that their department already has in its curriculum should contact their department's Summer Departmental Representative (Summer DR) to request permission to teach a CTR in summer. This competition is specifically for proposing new courses.

Questions about all aspects of this initiative will be addressed at the technical information sessions. You may email Steven Mintz, GSAS Teaching Center director at sm3031@columbia.edu if you wish to communicate your intent to submit a course proposal.

To propose a class for Summer Term 2010 through the GSAS Summer Teaching Scholars: Teaching and Course Design competition, please complete the proposal form and submit it no later than October 1, 2008 to Steven Mintz, sm3031@columbia.edu or 302 Philosophy Hall, MC 4997.
