Teaching With Technology

New electronic technologies are not just glitzy toys; they are tools that can give students unprecedented access to research materials; allow instructors to create exciting active learning projects; reinforce student learning using simulations and 3-D modeling; and enhance communication and collaboration.

The use of technology has evolved through a series of overlapping stages. The first stage improved communication and the ways that students accessed course materials. Email, discussion boards, class websites, and course management software like Courseworks were important aspects of this first phase of innovation.

The second stage places a greater emphasis on collaboration, active engagement, and social interaction. Wikis, blogs, mash-ups, podcasts, tags, and social networking are the buzz words of this second phase.

Among the most exciting recent innovations are:

1. Virtual discussion labs that employ a white board, a polling device, and instant messenging.

2. Polling which allows me to assess student comprehension.

3. Whiteboards which allow students to compare and contrast essays written by their classmates.

4. Digital Storytelling through which students create multimedia "movies" combining narration and a variety of audio and visual resources.
