Synopsis
This is a screen adaptation of an unfinished script
from Dovzhenko’s journal entries. An artist
arrives in a village with the intention of building
an iconostasis in the village church. The villagers
who pose for various saints—to be depicted
on the iconostasis— notice that they experience
a kind of spiritual elation in the process. This
is openly resented by the representatives of the
new revolutionary authorities. The iconostasis is
destroyed and the artist arrested and taken away. |
