Synopsis
Based on the eponymous story by Mykola Hohol (Nikolai Gogol) about a trip to the Russian tsar's court undertaken by Cossack Vasyl from the Ukrainian village of Dykanka and his-comrade-in-arms Zaporozhian Cossack Andrii to deliver a petition. On the way they get into all kinds of scraps - get into a fight with the enemy, narrowly escape a trap set by the Devil himself, and even go down to hell and see a whole bunch of scary stuff. This folk comedy is a celebration of the invincible spirit of the people, its sense of honor, and dignity in the face of adversity. Portraying the pompous, oppressive, and inhumane ways of Russian Empire it ridicules its Soviet and post-Soviet successors.
This film has been restored and digitally re-mastered as part of the 8-disk DVD gift set "Ukrainian Film Classics. Ivan Mykolaichuk," issued by the National Oleksander Dovzhenko Center in 2010.
