Seventh Generation exposes its audience to a Bulgarian community in southern Ukraine. Filmed about a decade after independence, this documentary shows how the people have willfully held onto their traditions, language, and identity despite decades of Soviet oppression and now mistreatment, negligence rather, on the part of the sovereign Ukrainian government. Thanks to their determination, it is truly possible to observe their culinary practices, festivities, and art and not realize that it all takes place within the modern boundaries of the Ukrainian state, yet the overwhelming concern seems to be for the continuation of their people and unique identity with the coming generations.
