A museum guide, military man, bank clerk, aircraft mechanic and other desperate Ukrainian men from all over the country get together once a year in autumn to work as porters during the mass pilgrimage of Hasidim to the city of Uman. Every year in September, thousands of Hasidim converge on this small town – to celebrate Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). They bring enormous amounts of baggage with them. Throughout these four days local porters sleep not more then three hours a night in makeshift tents by the side of the road, and spend the rest of the time carrying tons of loads for the Hasidim. This is well worth their effort for in four days each of them makes the amount that equals their average two-month salary. The festival is also the time of intense, often uneasy, often comic, interaction between two cultures that have existed side by side in Ukraine for many centuries, and that in this case have only four days to reconnect.
