Kira Muratova's New Feature Narrative "Melody for a Street-Organ"
November 7, 2007, Odesa, Ukraine.
Kira
Muratova, the renowned Ukrainian filmmaker, followed the old tradition
of breaking a plate for good luck on the first day of shooting for her
new feature narrative, titled "Melody for a Street-Organ".
The protagonists of the film are a young brother and sister who have recently
been orphaned. They are almost sent to different boarding schools, but they escape
together and begin a life on the streets, where they bravely fight to survive.
These roles will be played by Olenka Kosiuk and Roman Burlaka.
A roster of actors from previous Muratova films take on the adult roles: the
Russian actors Renata Litvinova and Oleg Tabakov, and Ukrainians Natalia Buzko,
Heorhiy Deliev, and Nina Ruslanova.
The screenplay was developed by Kyivan dramaturge Volodymyr Zuyev in collaboration
with Muratova. Volodymyr Panko is the director of cinematography, and Valentyn
Sylvestrov composed the score.
The film is being shot in Odesa and Kyiv. Oleh Kokhan, who produced Muratova’s
film "Two in One", will produce "Melody for a Street-Organ".
Kokhan’s production company, the "Sota Cinema Group", is co-financing
the film with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Ukraine. The premiere of
the film is scheduled for 2008.
