Salary Guidelines for Officers of Research

I am enclosing the new salary ranges for the 2009-10 academic year for full-time officers of research. These ranges, and the guidelines described below, should be used in determining the salaries for the upcoming year for officers of research outside of the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Departments and centers at the CUMC should follow the guidelines issued by Executive Vice President Lee Goldman. Human Resources will send you separate instructions on the research support staff.

The University intends to move to a single set of salary guidelines over the next three years for both the Morningside campus and CUMC. In keeping with that goal, the minimum salary for postdoctoral officers of research will grow by 1.89 percent in 2009-10. The minimums for the other ranks have been increased by approximately one percent. In addition to observing the minimums, you should limit the average salary increases for the officers of research in your units to one percent. Individual increases, of course, will depend upon the availability of funding and the performance of the officer.

Salaries should be reviewed on the officer's anniversary date. If an officer's salary is within the approved range and the increase meets the guidelines for this year, you only need to submit the appropriate personnel forms. Salaries that are below the minimum and starting salaries that are above the review point will require the prior approval of my office. Similarly, we will review salary increases in those units where the average exceeds our guidelines. In those cases, you should provide written explanation of the reasons for the salary or salary increase you are requesting. In the Arts and Sciences and Engineering, such requests will require the approval of the Vice President or Dean before they are forwarded to my office.

I would appreciate your cooperation in implementing these policies. If you have any questions or concerns about them, you should call Pearl Spiro, Assistant Provost for Academic Appointments, at x43813.
