Central University Approvals
Once a new certificate program has been approved within its school of origin, the dean submits to the Vice Provost for Academic Administration a proposal describing its purpose, curriculum and the resources available to support it. The Vice Provost reviews proposals for new programs on behalf of the Provost. In addition, he sends them to the University Registrar who reviews them for conformity with University policies and New York State regulations and to the Vice President for Information Resources and University Librarian who determines if the University has the information resources to support them.
The Vice Provost sends the proposal to the deans of the other schools of the University to determine if the new program will conflict with, or adversely affect, one they already offer or intend to offer. If a dean raises questions about the new program, further consideration of the proposal is suspended until this is resolved.
Once a proposal for a new certificate program has all of the necessary central authorizations and teh acceptance of th eother schools, the Vice Provost forwards it to the University Senate for review.
The dean's office in which the new program will be offered should e-mail the Office of the Vice Provost an electronic version of the proposal at rm271@columbia.edu and follow up with three print copies. The proposal should consist of the forms, Application for Registration of a New Certificate Program and Proposal for a New Degree or Certification Program. Both the electronic and print versions of the forms should have the appropriate signatures confirming that the new program has all of the necessary approvals within the school.
