This ad hoc grievance committee has been established to look, in the first place, into the set of issues and complaints that gave rise to the current controversy, but it will not exclude consideration of, and investigation into other related grievances. Its focus will be the character of interactions between faculty and students occurring within the classroom and the broader pedagogical environment. It will produce a full and frank report, which will be confidential, and which will be delivered to the Vice-President for Arts and Sciences, and it will also produce a summary report which will be made publicly available.
The committee welcomes submissions in writing by those who come to talk with it, preferably before their appearance. Written submissions and requests for an appointment may be emailed to Margaret Edsall at me2@columbia.edu or left in the mailbox of the Office of the Vice President on the ground floor of Low Library. Submissions should be clearly addressed to the Ad Hoc Grievance Committee, c/o Margaret Edsall.
The committee also welcomes written submissions by anyone with views relating to the matter in hand; however, the committee will conduct conversations only with those individuals with information directly bearing on its deliberations. The committee will honor the confidentiality of those who speak with it. Anyone wishing to submit anonymous material may do so but the opportunity on the part of the committee to talk to individuals with relevant information to impart will strengthen that information’s credibility and utility. Anyone coming to speak with the committee may be accompanied by another individual, who will not, however, be permitted to speak with the committee. The committee comprises the five faculty members previously announced, and is advised by Floyd Abrams.
