In Memoriam: Miriam Wallach

The faculty steering committee, professional staff, and student interns of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery mourn the loss of our dear friend and benefactor Miriam Wallach, who with her late husband Ira ('28CC, '31LAW, '83HON) established the Gallery in 1986. Mrs. Wallach, a graduate of Hunter College, served on Columbia's Art History and Archaeology Advisory Council. She and Mr. Wallach shared a serious interest in Asian art and provided ongoing support of the gallery at Columbia that bears their name. Miriam and Ira were married from 1938 until Mr. Wallach's death in 2007.

Mrs. Wallach, through her family's foundation, recently made a generous commitment that will make it possible to relocate an expanded Wallach Gallery to the new arts building on the Manhattanville campus.

Mrs. Wallach will be greatly missed but her memory will endure through the generous contributions she has made to the arts on our campus. The Wallach Gallery and the Department of Art History and Archeology, along with the entire Columbia University community, extend our sincere condolences to her children Kate, Sue, and Ken, and to their families.
