Security Policy for WBAR

Fall 2000

1. Off-Air Procedure

    1. While we are off-air*, the Personnel Director will submit a list of executive staff, and sign-in sheets, to the security booth. Only the people on this list may have access to the WBAR key, until a DJ list is submitted.
    2. The executive staff member must leave her/his identification card at the security booth, to ensure that s/he will remember to return the key.
    3. On an attached sign-in sheet, the executive staff member must sign in when the key is picked up, and sign out when it is returned.

*Off-air times during the Fall semester are approximately the first three weeks of September, the Election Day weekend, Thanksgiving weekend, and Winter Break (starting with the Required Reading Days).

Off-air times during the Spring semester are approximately the first two weeks of Spring semester (end of January), Spring Break, and Summer Break (starting with the Required Reading Days).

Off-air times during the summer are determined by the summer staff.

2. On-Air Procedure

    1. While we are on-air, the Personnel Director will submit a programming schedule to the security booth. This schedule will be used in conjunction with the previously-submitted executive staff list to determine who is allowed in the station. Only people on these two lists are to be allowed access to the key.
    2. The staff member must leave his/her identification card at the security booth.
    3. On the attached sign-in sheet, the staff member must sign in when the key is picked up, and sign out when it is returned.
    4. The Personnel Director is permitted to periodically review the sign-in sheet, to see who has been frequenting the station and at what times.
    5. At the end of each semester, the Personnel Director will remove the programming schedule from the Security booth, and those DJ’s will no longer be permitted the key to the station.

(OR: DJ’s will be allowed to pick up the key from security within 10 minutes of their shows. They may not pick up the key at any time that is not their show time. Security should call the Personnel Director to inform her that the key is not at Security, and to give the name of the person with the key.)

3) Alarm Procedure

    1. If the alarm is triggered at WBAR, a security guard must check the station immediately to verify if any illicit activity is taking place.
      1. If the alarm is sounding, and the door is locked and no one is present, Security must contact the Personnel Director on the WBAR pager (1-888-888-7759, ask for "WBAR Personnel") so that she can go to the station and turn it off.
      2. If the alarm is sounding, and people claiming to be DJ’s have entered the station, have triggered the alarm, and are unable to turn it off, the DJ’s must be escorted to the Security booth so that their identity may be verified against the programming schedule, The Personnel Director must also be paged to turn off the alarm.
      3. If the alarm is sounding, and suspicious activity is taking place (i.e. the door is open with no one in the station, someone is stealing, etc.), the security guard must close the door and immediately call the General Manager at home (851-1315, ask for Veronica Liu), and page the Personnel Director.
    2. If a staff member arrives at the station, and the alarm appears to have been sounding for more than five minutes without a security guard present, the staff member will report the date, time, and situation to the General Manager, who will keep a log of such incidents. This is to determine whether the alarm equipment is properly functioning, and whether the incidents occur in a pattern. The General Manager will regularly report incidents to the College Activities Advisor for WBAR.

4) Safety and Security in McIntosh

    1. WBAR requests that the safety lights in McIntosh remain on during all broadcasting hours, 10am–4:15am, seven days a week.
    2. DJ’s will be informed that they may call the Security booth during the nighttime hours, to be escorted from Lower Level McIntosh to the Barnard front gate, if they feel unsafe.
