Professor Andrew J. Nathan discusses China and the 2008 Summer Olympics

With violent protests in Tibet, an earthquake in the Sichuan province in May that left 69,000 dead, and a suspected terrorist attack in the northwest Muslim region just days before the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, the international press has converged on China.

On the eve of the games, Andy Nathan, the Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, and co-editor of the forthcoming How East Asians View Democracy (Columbia University Press 2008), was a sought out expert to discuss why this year’s Olympics may be one of the most political in at least a generation.
