Weatherhead M.A. Training Grant
Provides up to $3,000 in support of research or internships in East Asia. Priority is given to projects that develop academic and/or professional expertise that crosses traditional disciplinary, geographic, or temporal boundaries, and/or combines regional and functional expertise. Examples of projects for submission would include, but are not limited to, research trips, unpaid internships, and summer acquisition of a second language. Priority is also given to applicants committed to make East Asia a part of their long-term career.
- Provides summer funding to support projects that develop academic and/or professional expertise that cross traditional disciplinary, geographic, or temporal boundaries, and/or combines regional and functional expertise.
- Eligibility
- M.A. students in GSAS and all professional school students
- Examples of projects include research or unpaid internships in East Asia, or summer acquisition of a second language.
- For projects in Southeast Asia apply for the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Grant instead
- Provides
- Up to $3,000 in support
- Average of 6 awards per summer.
- Selection criteria include:
- Academic excellence
- Demonstrated commitment to East Asia, and to incorporating it in one’s long-term academic or professional career goals
Application Procedures
- Submit the following application materials:
- Basic Application Form
- Weatherhead M.A. Training Grant Application Form
- one page description of the proposed project
- official Columbia University transcript
- one letter of recommendation, preferably from a Columbia University faculty member or instructor
- detailed budget which includes a break down of your expenses
- resume
- brief statement of purpose explaining your long-term academic/career plans and how this training grant will help you to achieve your plans
- if your project is an internship, a letter from the host organization confirming your internship
- any additional information (letters of invitation from host organizations, description of the language program, etc.) that you think would be helpful to the review committee
