Photographs, like the people and places they depict, contain layers of details not immediately apparent. Some are hidden in the image itself, others lie beyond the camera frame in the relationship between photographer and subject. When we take the time to look – really look – we are rewarded by the unexpected expansion of meaning and nuance.
Each of the photographs selected for this show invites further consideration and reflection from the viewer. The social divisions captured here include urban-rural divides, income disparities, and the boundary between the natural and artificial worlds. While these are phenomena we often encounter in everyday life, their images are not. Expressing their knowledge of the societies and people they photograph, these student photographers invite us to reconsider what we expect to find -- and see what otherwise might remain unseen.
