WEAI professor Gray Tuttle receives tenure

The WEAI congratulates professor Gray Tuttle, who has received tenure at Columbia University. Tuttle, the Leila Hadley Luce Associate Professor of Modern Tibetan Studies, studies the history of twentieth century Sino-Tibetan relations as well as Tibet’s relations with the China-based Manchu Qing Empire. In 2005, Columbia University Press published his book Tibetan Buddhists in the Making of Modern China. His current research project is "Amdo Tibet: Middle Ground Between Lhasa and Beijing (1578-1865)," a historical analysis of the economic and cultural relations between China and Tibet. Tuttle, who joined the WEAI faculty in 2005, received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
