Columbia Festival of Winds
On March 1, 2009, The Columbia University Wind Ensemble will host the first annual Columbia Festival of Winds to support inner-city music education. Music is a quintessential element that distinguishes our humanity, and it is important to maintain our commitment to music education in New York City Schools where budgets for music programs are continually diminishing. The mission of the Columbia Festival of Winds is to raise money through performance with other New York City musicians and ensembles to subsidized music education programs in New York City schools. The festival will feature continuous music from 12pm-9:30pm from New York City wind bands, of the community, collegiate and high school level. Theodore Wiprud, Director of Music Education at the New York Philharmonic, will discuss the value of music education, and the Wycliffe Gordon Quintet will complete the festival with a headline performance from 8-9:30pm.
