Outreach Events:
Girl's Science Day
 |
This is WISC's biggest event! Each fall, middle school girls from around the city come to Columbia for a full day of science. They participate in hands-on experiments designed and led by graduate students, see demonstrations about how fun science can be and eat lunch with professors. This has been a big success anually since 2004. Check the GSD website for more information about how to register (for 8th graders) or how to volunteer.

Take a Girl to College Day
Each year since 2005, 7th grade girls in the area come to Columbia to shadow an undergraduate for the day and tour research labs in physics, chemistry, and engineering.
This year's event will take place on April 23, 2008. Registration is now closed.

Science Saturday Starters (S3)
Graduate student volunteers lead hands-on lessons with 7th graders from Wadleigh Secondary School and the Double Discovery Center programs on Saturday mornings throughout the semeter. Past experiments have included making slime, learning about liquid crystals, playing with memory metals and determining the "bounciness" of balls made from liquid latex with different additives. Volunteering to run an experiment on one Saturday this semester is a great way to develop your own skills teaching science without making a huge time commitment. Jeff Meisner and Noah Tremblay are coordinators for Spring 2008; contact them if you want to run an experiment. The program will run from February 23 through March 29.
This program is organized by WISC in conjunction with the Double Discovery Center (DDC), and funded by the Nano Science and Engineering Center (NSEC).

Science Graduate Student Visits to the Urban Assembly School
We have ongoing visits to the Urban Assembly School, which is a
school in the Bronx. One or two people go every month to talk about
science and their lives as graduate students. If you are
interested in visiting (this is a one-time commitment only!), contact Mari LoVerde .
Help with High School Science projects
This activity will be for a couple of hours every other
week throughout the school year at two different high schools, one on the
Upper West Side and one in Brooklyn. If you are interested, please
contact Melinda Han.

Math and Science Conference for 7th grade girls at Barnard
WISC members have volunteered since 2006 as classroom assistants to the workshop leaders for this annual outreach event in March. Check their website for more details.
