CourseWorks to Mark Five Years of Service in December

29 Nov 06

On December 14, CourseWorks, the University's course management system, will celebrate its fifth anniversary. It is offered by CUIT and the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning in close coordination with the Libraries and Columbia University Biomedical and Health Information Services. CourseWorks is used on the Morningside and Medical campuses and at Barnard College, Teachers College, and the Union Theological Seminary.

Originally conceived as a successor to individually maintained course Web sites, CourseWorks was used in 640 courses in Spring 2002, its first full semester of use. More than 8,000 faculty, staff, and students logged into CourseWorks that semester to obtain course materials, download a syllabus, access library reserves, administer and take tests and quizzes, and participate in online discussions.

Since then, CourseWorks has become an integral part of courses throughout the University. More than 2700 courses are using CourseWorks this semester and more than 25,000 faculty, staff, and students have accessed CourseWorks since September 1. To meet the rapidly growing instructional needs of the University and its affiliates, CourseWorks now includes an evaluation system to rate instructors and TA's; a photo roster feature for instructors; an improved discussion board interface; and guest access for Columbia-affiliated users with a valid UNI and others.

CourseWorks has also grown beyond its primary teaching and learning focus. Dozens of administrators and staff use CourseWorks to learn about and be certified to use AP/CAR, the University's procurement system. Academic administrators use CourseWorks to manage administrative work such as curriculum development, track and administer waiver exams, and survey students on quality of life issues, professional development, and career services. Some departments and programs use CourseWorks' file and discussion tools to continue talking about topics presented at brown-bag lunches long after all of the food has been eaten.

For more information about CourseWorks and how you can use it in your course or department, send an e-mail message to courseworks@columbia.edu or contact the CUIT Help Desk at 212-854-1919.
