CUIT and the Libraries Upgrade EDS Lab Over the Summer

25 Aug 06

During this past summer CUIT and the Libraries upgraded the computer workstations of the Electronic Data Service (EDS) lab in 215 Lehman Library.

Operated jointly by the Columbia University Libraries and CUIT, EDS supports instruction and research that involve numeric and geo-spatial data resources. The EDS group assists instructors and researchers in identifying and obtaining data, and transferring it into the format needed for analysis with either statistical or Graphic Information Systems (GIS) software.

Each EDS computer desktop is now equipped with a Dell Precision Workstation 670, with dual 2.80 GHz XEON processors. Every computer comes with a 30-inch monitor. These larger machines and screens are intended to facilitate the use of GIS software.

CUIT has designed the EDS lab computing environment to be more compatible with the CUIT labs located across campus. In addition, CUIT now manages the software update process, which will allow us to install updates as soon as they are available, an advantage over having to wait for semester breaks.

New spatial data products have also been added, most notably, Google Earth Pro, an advanced version of the popular Google Earth application. Other spatial data includes: 1) the National Geographic TOPO! Maps, 2) Sanborn CitySets maps for part of New York City (Manhattan south of 60th street and Downtown Brooklyn), Newark, and Jersey City for the year 2002, and 3) "Blue Sky" 2003 color imagery of New York at 0.25 meter resolution.

EDS's numerical data collection comprises national and international data from a variety of sources: the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, U.S. Federal Government (including the US Census), International Monetary Fund, World Bank, United Nations, OECD, New York City Planning, commercial publishers, and others. Data covers a range of topics such as socio-demographic topics, public opinion polls, politics, health, and economics.

EDS specialist librarians in both data and GIS are available for consultations. For more information on hours and services, see the EDS web site at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/eds/ or send email to eds@columbia.edu. We recommend making appointments for your larger GIS and data projects.
