Upgrades Enhance ColumbiaNet Stations and Labs

14 Mar 07

As part of our goal to improve the services we provide to faculty, students, and staff, we have once again upgraded the CUIT public computing facilities around campus. Over the past few months, we have upgraded 60 ColumbiaNet stations and over 140 Windows stations in Lerner and the residence halls.

The new ColumbiaNet stations -- or kiosks -- continue CUIT's commitment to provide-high quality, high-reliability web browser and e-mail stations in convenient locations throughout campus. These systems provide improved performance and larger 17" screens and to enhance the web browsing experience. As well as upgrading all of Lerner's ColumbiaNet stations, we have also upgraded other stations around campus including those in Mudd, Kent, Low, and SIPA. ColumbiaNet stations are designed for quick access to basic web and print services.

Designed for more extensive usage, CUIT computer labs and clusters are located throughout the campus. We have now upgraded over 300 Windows stations with higher performance systems and larger 20" LCD displays to better support the academic needs of students and faculty throughout campus. A major recipient of the upgrades is Lerner Hall, where we have added larger display screens in the second and third floor labs. Columbia labs provide MS Office applications for word processing and email, general classroom applications such as Mathmatica and SAS, as well as course-specific applications such as Stata and ArcView.

Support for labs and clusters is provided by Client Services. Part-time technical consultants are available in some computer labs, including 213 Butler, 323 IAB, and 251 Engineering Terrace. Check the lab schedules to find out when the consultants are on duty.
